Why join our coaching groups?

The case for increasing diversity in organisations is clear. How to do this is less clear, but at Apply Psychology we are continually gathering ideas and research to create information and interventions that can help.

One of these interventions is running coaching groups. These are small, exclusive groups that run only once or twice a year. We do not compete with large programmes for many, but provide something that is more intimate, informal and designed to build close relationships. With that comes psychological safety and the freedom and space to be truly authentic and that naturally generates brave ideas and change.

The experience is hard to describe but easy to experience. The groups of 6 meet (virtually) for 9 sessions across the year. We follow an outline framework of activities to shift thinking and move to action. This includes a focus on strengths. The power comes from the group – we learn from each other, support and challenge each other.

Individual outcomes are around clarity of what’s important to feel fulfilled at work. They include significant increases in self-confidence and recognition of the value that is brought to work and how to leverage that further. Outcomes often relate to tangible changes – moving locations, changing job roles, and having different conversations at work which lead to promotions and greater opportunities to shine.

Organisational outcomes are also clear. Women are often re-invigorated and feel that their ambitions can be released (several have gone on to ask to be Directors). Some stay when they would have left. Or some leave when they realise that the fit just isn’t there (although that is not often). They have different conversations with others in their organisations – they encourage other women and under-represented groups, and they also challenge structural bias. It’s when women start to find their voice that things start to change – research has shown that more diverse teams improve in part because women tend to encourage more views to be expressed (from men and women) which results in better outcomes.

The next group starts on 17th September and costs £1950 plus VAT for the year.
